I have a 5 month old neitherland dwarf who recently has just started chewing up our carpet. Also within the past month has started going the bathroom on the carpet. Do you know why she does these things?

Also shes getting bigger and I want to get a new cage is there any good places in MA or NH?

Thanks Brittany.

Hi, Brittany.

Making your own cage out of NIC cubes is definitely the way to go. With about an hour’s work and about of supplies, you can make a cage that will suit you better than any 0 cage you can buy.

Don’t forget to cover the bottom of the cage with towels or rugs, not wire.

As for your girl chewing the carpet, welcome to the club! You’ve got a chewer! Providing “appropriate” toys to chew on can help. Covering the carpet holes also helps.

You said your girl pees on the carpet… You said she’s 5 months old? Is she spayed yet? Spaying her could cut out this behavior. Spaying girl bunnies is necessary for another reason, too… 80% of female rabbits get ovarian cancer by the age of 3 if they are not spayed. Save your girl early (and your carpets!) by spaying her at the age of 6 or 7 months. Be sure to look for a rabbit-savvy vet, as there are antibiotics that dogs and cats get that are fatal to rabbits.

Is it the same place or different places? The same place would indicate that maybe that’s where you should be putting your litter box. Different places could mean that your girl is staking out her territory. Is there a new pet in your house? Did you rearrange the furniture recently? Has something, anything small even, changed in the environment? Rabbits are very sensitive to changes, and maybe she’s just reasserting herself. Moving a litter box could solve your problem.

Good luck!
